Upon arrival, my children and I were able to see several glass works being cut and shaped in front of our eyes, with detailed explanations from the friendly employees.
The variety of colors and shapes of the glass works is astounding -- it must be seen to be believed! Stunningly beautiful works of art. The quality of glass blowing is second to none with many lower priced items for us regular folks to buy. We enjoyed walking around the amazing art on creative display. Mentioned on 2 lists. The River Arts District is a bustling creative community of sculptors, painters, glass artists, fabric artists, ceramic artists, print-makers, potters, woodworkers, jewelry-makers, and other artisans. Great spot to tak photos and check out some talented artists. Enjoyed walking around this area. Some great art work and reasonable prices. The graffiti on the buildings is a great addition to the artisan atmosphere. Centrally-located off of what feels like a hidden alley, The Rhu offers lovely baked goods, foodie-approved breakfast sandwiches, and delightful coffee.
This bakery, cafe, and pantry all-in-one is a great place to get a local coffee in the heart of downtown Asheville— especially if you want something baked to go with it. Here, you can get all litany of breakfast sandwiches— from Southern-style pulled pork with pimento cheese and collards on a housemade biscuit, to a smoked trout bagel with cream cheese. Like the meal I had only days before at The Local in Boone, NC, I wanted complete silence when eating my gluten free biscuit so that I could savor the delicious flavors.
The last time I had a biscuit so delicious was from Honest Biscuits at Pike Place Market in Seattle coincidentally founded and owned by an old acquaintance in Raleigh. The Rhu knows how to make a fluffy, melt in your mouth biscuit. Super good spot. And for as much as I'm a straight black coffee guy, their teas are really good. Lots of odds and ends for sale as well, including putting together picknick baskets with a day heads up notice.
It does feel like a bit of a small space for how popular it is - granted there is upstairs seating but we didn't check that out. Still, worth checking out. Super hipster spot in the middle of downtown. Fresh artisanal bread, delicious breakfast sandwiches. Great selection of interesting herbal and nonherbal teas and coffees. Just what we were looking for for breakfast.
No exaggeration! Lavender latte is also fantastic! High Five Coffee has multiple locations across the city and is a family-owned Asheville coffee shop. They serve up coffee classics plus a few of their own specialties with beans roasted from Counter Culture Coffee in Durham. High Five Coffee is a local chain that visitors are apt to see all over Asheville, and with good reason. This family-owned small business is all about the loving details.
Absolutely delicious!!! Hand crafted with care. Even the foam has a design on it. Friendly, warm, inviting. The Spicy Mocha was amazing!!! Had my 1st experience at High Five coffee, in downtown Asheville, today. It definitely has a cinnamon taste, with a mild kick from the cayenne.
The sweet scone had hints of all spice and chocolate chips. It was a nice pallet cleanser between the 2 coffees. Go drop if next time you are downtown!! We stop at High Five everytime we're in town! They never disappoint, it's always consistent and so delicious!

These treats were the best! Also got some macarons but ate them before I thought about snapping a picture. The raspberry mousse cake was to die for! Absolutely divine! The tiramisu is one of the best I've ever had! Definitely a place worth stopping at! Loved all of the gluten free desserts!!

Such a breath of fresh air to be around so many friendly people. While this coffee shop offers specialty drinks, including beer, the ambiance is the real draw of this shop.
Wait, where the heck am I?. Did I just enter a magical fairy world in the middle of downtown Asheville? What a wonderful place to stop to grab a refreshing drink. The staff is super friendly and the environment inside is super cozy.
Adorable place to grab a coffee on the run. Their Coffee Soda is unique, but I highly recommend it. I got the pistachio and rosewater syrup with a splash of cream, and my fiance who usually hates trying new things ended up ordering one for himself. We've had their coffee before. Some of the best in town. This last visit was disappointing. The covid restrictions apparently self imposed are quite restrictive. Ordering is a hassle, the seating area is very small next to the front door which makes for a cold experience on a winter day , and the mask restrictions are airline-like wear your mask between sips.
It's very sad to see a great business suffering from so much self-imposed pain. Hope they make it so that someday I can go back. When only quirky items will do, you cannot go wrong with a trip over to the Asheville Emporium. Chockfull of new and used items, this ultra-cute gift shop highlights local artisans across all the artistic disciplines. Across their bright, clean shop, you can find: smokymountains. I know sometimes you want to avoid souvenir type shops for fear of entering tacky-ville, but the Asheville Emporium has a surprising number of cool local gifts.
They also have a section at the back where they print their own T-shirts, so cool to see that set up. Fun merchandise and amazing customer service! This store has great merchandise and truly amazing customer service. I bought some cute items there this weekend and managed to leave my phone behind. Not only did the store staff search for and locate my phone, the store owner and the staff arranged for a member of the team to bring it back to me across town. It was so incredibly nice, and truly the type of customer service that's almost impossible to find these days.

I typically like to get something with the areas name and or what they stand for, found the perfect Xmas ornaments showing the hiking and mountains, hand carved by the owner!!
My type of local shopping. Store with a lot of variety. Asheville souvenirs. It is in the expensive end since a lot of it is locally made. In a very walkable area. Antique store. Customers from around the world shop here for the selection and prices. Bryant Antiques is a 9, square foot antique store with over 70 dealers. Better than a museum. Overall I enjoyed looking at this huge antique mall and I did find some jewelry to buy, but it was a more arduous process than it should have been.
Lexington Park Antiques is an all-in-one shop for anything antique or vintage. The place is so large it feels like a market with dozens of unique stalls. There is thrifty clothing, old leather work, collectibles from Asheville, and other cool finds that could belong in a museum.
It has a family owned feel, and the staff was very friendly and helpful. They do accept card payments but do not accept American Express. Coffee shop. Summit Coffee is a specialty coffee franchise across North Carolina. Summit Coffee is a popular franchise in North Carolina that carries specialty coffees. The company offers several locations throughout Asheville with different things for different tastes.
If you prefer a laid-back situation to simply sip coffee and people watch, they have you covered. Very friendly staff, second time here and walked an extra half mile past two other coffee shop to return!
Dog friendly, Baisie was waiting for her pupcup when I ordered… she knew this place! I speculate that management sets the example for the staff, same great friendly service twice with totally different staff. Great coffee - La Marzocco machine means they are serious about coffee. Not much for pastries, but that was OK - the great coffee made up for it! This little coffee shop is located on a shady street with a fair amount of outdoor seating to enjoy your beverages.
Indoor seating also available though limited. Pleasant and efficient service. There are a great variety of shops in and around the arcade. This is a good area to grab a bite before or after shopping as well.
There are two parking garages nearby making for an easy in and out. This street has the most bang for the buck.

Grovewood features arts and crafts from over artists located throughout the United States. While there we visited the car museum, and the Homespun Museum. It is free to visit but I recommend a donation. Beautifully maintained museums and grounds. Neat place to visit. The gentleman in the Car Museum was very friendly. The staff in the store was not very friendly, one especially.
I still say visit, there's a lot of history here. Oh, what a gorgeous place to feast your eyes on beautiful art of all kinds! From the sculpture garden out front to the two floors of inventive, beautifully crafted art indoors, it was a wonderful, visual treat to visit Grovewood Village.
The staff were friendly and helpful. I pored over beautiful, one-of-a-kind paintings, furniture, pottery, and much more, wishing I had unlimited funds to buy the beautiful carved dresser, the playful koi bench, the fox painting on wood Visit Grovewood's web page for a taste of what you'll find on site.

The Thomas Wolfe Memorial is a rambling 19th-century mansion on North Market Street in Downtown Asheville dedicated to honoring the famous American author whose writing was inspired by the city and its people. The museum contains over eight hundred items pertinent to the writer and the era of his literary works. In a time-capsule fashion, the rooms of the house are furnished as they were during the period Thomas Wolfe was resident in the property and it was functioning as a boarding house.
The tours run every hour starting at am and the last at pm. The guided house tour takes around 45 minutes. The introductory film about Thomas Wolfe's life runs about 20 minutes and provides a lot of background information.
The Museum is also very informative. I liked the new exhibit that showed how the house was originally and then how it was after the first additions and the second additions. The house is well kept and filed with many historical treasures.
There is a small gift shop in the museum that sells books about Wolfe; Wolfe's books; toys; photos and postcards. Free parking in front of the house. Historic house museum restored and preserved as it was when Thomas Wolfe lived there in his childhood. Interesting house tour.

If you haven't, it's a well preserved piece of history from the early 's and gives a glimpse into Asheville at that time. George W. Wander through more than 25, square feet of European and American antiques, fine art, and decorative art, as well as Southern folk art, potter, and furniture, and African art.

Whether you are a designer, collector, or decorator, chances are you will find something you want to bring home after visiting this antique shop. Pricey for a tour, but its gorgeous! We got the audio tour which I high recommend, we went when they were decorated for Christmas and I am so happy we did. For us this is a once in a lifetime thing to see it and it was so worth it!
Beautiful mansion on and even more beautiful view of the land they own. The drive to the house was long but beautiful! The food was pretty good and the little shops are adorable! Pictures do not do this place justice. Just an amazing and beautiful place. Lots of parking where you can either walk or take a trolley to the estate.
Make sure you get your timed entry tickets. If you can try to eat at The Stables restaurant on site. The audio tour is a great add on to explain all the different rooms throughout the Manson. Get to see how the rich, old money rich, people lived. Every room has amazing architect and amazing pieces of furniture.
The swimming pool down stairs was just ridiculous. You get to see how the help lived and how the ran and maintained the house. It takes a few hours to take the tour. After going through house you can walk around the grounds. Very easy to spend a whole day here and still may not see everything. I hear Christmas is a great time to come, but the spring flowers were wonderful too. Make some plans and take a visit to this place, we'll worth your time! What a great experience! Walking through this beautiful estate was like going back in time!
Kudos to the curators for keeping this amazing piece of American history alive! The restaurants on the estate we also liked. Overall one of the high points of this year! Science museum. Small science museum featuring playful, hands-on exhibits, plus various events for children.
The museum may be small, but it has some powerful interactive exhibits which will blow any visitor away. Step inside the Hurricane Simulator and feel the full force of a storm or create rain in the French Broad River Water table display before getting up close to the skeleton of a Tyrannosaurus Rex or a robot used to explore Mars. Small but mighty.
Staff enthusiastic and courteous. Kids years old were entertained for 90 min and plenty for adults to learn too. We only had one day downtown and are glad we included it. We enjoyed our time here, albeit it was a tad small for my 10 year-old's interest, but still fun and educational. I overheard one of the staff members speak of a future expansion, so be on the lookout for the possibility of that.
Museum very small, not really overjoyed that we went there and visited. My daughter seemed to like it, but didn't protest when we wanted to leave after 45 minutes. Maybe it will grow more in the future and become bigger and better, hopefully. I didn't have any photos from inside the bookstore but it is absolutely adorable! They have the genres sectioned off perfectly, so you know exactly where to go! Employees were extremely helpful and sweet! They also had a blind date with a book section, the book was wrapped up so you couldn't see what it was, and a typed synopsis was on the front to tell you what it was about without giving it away!
This bookstore is so charming and well curated. A must-visit in Asheville! Cozy book store with a good selection. They have some great picks displayed on the tops of the bookcases in the fiction section and also a bestseller section near the front. And a nice surprise was a selection of books that you can buy without looking at the cover.
The books are individually wrapped and have things such as genre and brief descriptions writing in the front of the wrapping. You choose your book based on that and when you buy it, you get to unwrap your surprise book. Lovely idea. South Asian restaurant. Indian chaat street snacks plus homestyle platters thalis in a funky, laid-back space. The brightly colored walls and murals are the perfect match to the vibrant flavor diversity of its dishes from thalis, to uttapam, street burgers and and snacks.
Last time we were in Asheville, this place was boarded up because of the pandemic. Now it's open, and we've found another place to eat when we're here. We were seated at the bar immediately got there around pm on a Saturday , and picked up the drink special frozen raspberry daquiri , then got an appetizer and two chicken Tikka wraps, which were incredible.
The bartender was friendly and chatted with us about everything, and even recommended her favorite chutneys and said they make their own bitters in-house. I wanted to try everything on the menu and we will certainly be back. Truly the best Indian food I've ever had in the United States!
I had heard about this place before our trip to Ashville and it was on my list of must-try places. We found the restaurant hours at most places in Ashville weren't great, many closed a few days every week which meant we had to try certain places all within specific days and a lot of them were open on the same days. Looking at their website I think this had more to do with the pandemic than what their business is typically like.
My friend and I are visiting Asheville for the weekend and a lot of people recommended this place to me. When we arrived it was a 1. While we were hungry, I was advised it was worth the wait. A little over 1. The staff was kind and accommodating to my allergies. The food was delicious and the service was great! The naan was impressively soft with perfect crispy browning.
Highly recommend the Sev Potato Dahi Puri appetizer. All the textures and flavors in these bite-sized portions were the best way to start the meal. The creamy butter chicken was the special of the day and it did not disappoint. The food was truly incredible! The flavors are so rich and well blended. It was a real gift to my palette!
We got the sweet potato chaat as an appetizer and wow! What an array of flavors! It was somehow both sweet and savory! For my main dish, I got the sloppy Jai, which is their take on a sloppy joe. I'm convinced the bhel puri is not from this earth, this beautifully balanced and sweet yet crunchy and acidic chutney that just glows with every bite.
Add on to that the chicken pakoras, some fries-like okra, and the vada pav and you'll see the magic. Just wish I left room for the butter chicken! I'm still thinking about it! If you're ever in Asheville, make a reservation, or wait the standby time to eat here; I promise it's worth it! Delicious street style Indian food. You have to try to fried okra. Also get the mango lassi. The staff is friendly and attentive. If you are in the mood for tasty Indian food this is the spot.
Organic restaurant. American restaurant. I love their avocado toast, blueberry scones, and sensational veggie bowls, which are fast and filling. Wow wow wow. Really good breakfast spot. All of options on the menu sounded good and the ingredients they use are fresh and well thought out. They have more than enough vegetarian options that you can turn into vegan with minimal changes.
Loved the breakfast burrito with tempeh bacon. Very flavorful and filling. We also got avocado toast, which had a good ratio of bread to avocado and good seasoning. My wife got the Gimme Kale with tofu scramble and loved it. Gluten free ciabatta bread? Yes please! Delicious bacon egg and cheese breakfast sammie. The chimmimayo was surprisingly delightful.
